How important is it that you follow the path laid down for you by the prophets and apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ? I have no doubt that every true child of God would answer that question with very a prompt "very important." But what if the question was, "how closely do you need to follow the path?" That is, how much discretion does a believer have, especially if he is trying to honor God and His Word? Isn't there some wiggle-room? Isn't there some allowance for various nuances of understanding? Regarding gaining access to the Kingdom of God, our Savior told us in Matthew 7:13, "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it." There is much that is a matter of liberty and conscience for the believer as he lives his life to God's glory, but in the matter of our salvation, the way and the means, the way is exceedingly narrow and the means are dictated by God. To dispense with God's appointed ways and means is to court His judgment and to treat one's salvation as a plaything. No wonder the apostle was alarmed by what he heard regarding the believers in Galatia. They were wandering from the path and they were about to lose everything they had received – Pastor Schlegel
