1 Timothy 3:14-16 – The Bible's Command for Creeds, Confessions & Catechisms – Sermon Outline
Intro: Should Churches have Creeds, Confessions, and Catechisms. Does this contradict sola scriptura?
Need: God has given the Church ministers gifted uniquely by the Holy Spirit to "rightly divide" God's Word in doctrine and teaching to help the Church know Christ through the Bible. Creeds, confessions, and catechisms are the fruit of ministers rightly dividing God's Word for the sake of God's people. They are sound doctrine and teaching, not sacred Scripture itself, but a great tool to understand God's Word.
Theme: Paul uses creeds to summarize the Christian faith for the Church of the living God.
1. Paul explains how the Church is to worship as the pillar and ground of the truth. (14-15) 2. Paul summarizes the Christian faith in creedal form centered around Jesus Christ (16) 3. Paul taught Timothy to equip faithful men to teach God's Word to others to oppose heresy. (2 Timothy 2:2ff.).
