Deuteronomy 6:4-5 declares that Yahweh is the God of the people of Israel and he is one - an affirmation of the monotheism of the true and only God. The text goes on to declare the obligation of the Israelites to love him with all of their human faculties. Jesus in Mark 12 affirms this as the greatest of all God's commands. He also expands the command by including our obligation to love him with all of our minds. The Israelites had solid reason to love him because he had delivered their people from Egyptian slavey. Likewise we have strong reason to love God because of the redemption provided his people in Christ's incarnation, death, and resurrection. The love and grace of God is more than sufficient reason to love him supremely, with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength.
