The people's demand for a king shows how our motives can affect our prayers. They wanted someone to unite around in spite of the fact they already had that in their covenant with God. They wanted someone who would save them from their enemies although God was already doing that. It was understandable they would be disenchanted with Samuel's corrupt sons, but they also wanted to be like the nations around them. They had already rejected God and were taking their values from society. Other people had more influence over them than their experience of God's faithfulness. And God gave in to their demand - he treats us as responsible beings. The long-term result was that future generations saw the failure of their kings and longed for the promised Messiah. God's answer in the long term was to send Christ. His character (Psalm 72) contrasts with that of Saul. We see his kingship in the pronouncements of Zechariah and John Baptist, in Jesus' ministry, and in the events that followed Pentecost. The story shows the importance of keeping fiath with God, and of keeping our heart. It reminds us that sin is often disguised, and we need a close walk with God in order to maintain right motives. We should be prepared to suffer indignity for the Lord's sake as we value his approval more than that of our neighbours. Above all, in Christ we have the king of whom scripture speaks. He not only rescues from the troubles of life, but from our worst enemy - sin, and our last enemy - death. God kept his covenant with them, even though they were unfaithful, and he will keep his covenant with us.
