Leprosy is the Old Testament picture of sin, and a leper is the picture of a sinner. The priest was a picture of Christ and it was he who declared a person clean or unclean - a leper or not. Sometimes it took a while to be certain in the matter. When it was certain that the person was a leper they were kept completely separated from everyone else. The issues from his body polluted and defiled everything and everyone he came into contact with. It is that way now. Sinners defile everything and everyone they touch with what issues forth from them. Any person who will not keep them at a distance, but drinks from their fountains and sits at their tables, will soon be a leper themselves.
