By now you all know that John's letter was written in response to a 1st century cult (Gnosticism): bad theology and bad morality. A byproduct of John's tests for discerning false teachers from true teachers was a means to also discern false believers from true believers. John's motive and theme, exposing false teachers, is particularly clear in this morning's text, as John fixes a spotlight on false teachers and their fundamentally flawed message. A false teacher is not simply mistaken or misguided, he is empowered by a false spirit. Christians are powered by the Holy Spirit, false teachers are controlled by an antichrist spirit. This morning I want to explain to you two ways to recognize the voice of an antichrist.
