The Second Epistle of Peter August 8, 2010 Sermon Lesson 12 2 Peter 3:7-13
LIVING HOLY AND GODLY LIVES IN LIGHT OF THE COMING DAY OF THE LORD
In light of the certain coming day of the Lord, we must live holy and godly lives.
Because the current heavens and earth are reserved for judgment (7-9)
Elapsed time: does not mean "delay"(8) One day is as a thousand years A thousand years is as one day The three "I's": Imminence (Rom 12:3); Interval (Mt 24:14); Ignorance (Mt 24:36) God's purpose for elapsed time: patience toward His elect (9) God is not willing that His elect should perish God is willing that His elect reach repentance
Because the day of the Lord will certainly come (10) The day will come like a thief (unexpectedly) (10a) The heavens will pass away with a roar (10b) The heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved (10c) The earth and its works will be laid bare (10d)
What sort of people ought you to be in holiness and godliness? (11-13) Waiting for and hastening the coming day of God (12) Waiting for new heavens and a new earth (13)
Conclusions: 1. All of our stuff is going to burn. (v. 10-12) 2. All of the ungodly will burn. (v. 7)
Therefore: Hasten the day of its coming by living lives of holiness and godliness. Look forward to the new heavens and the new earth in which righteousness dwells.
