Jesus spoke of the narrow door (Luke) and the narrow gate (Matthew), the entry leading to the kingdom and eternal life. The Luke mention was in response to the question, "Lord, will those who are saved be few?" (Luke 13:23). This question, asked near the end of the Lord's public ministry was based on the observation that only a few people in Israel were believing and following Jesus. Jesus' answer supported this observation, noting that most in Israel presumed their place and position in the kingdom was due to their being the natural offspring of Abraham. Jesus sought to correct this notion by showing that only new covenant people (which included Gentiles) would be part of the kingdom, but the disbelieving Jews would be cast out (v. 28). Do not presume on your entrance to eternal life, make sure of it (2 Corinthians 13:5).
