When we are not paying attention we loose things. Paul tells us here first of all to pay attention to ourselves. Look into the spiritual mirror to see how we look spiritually. As a preacher we need to doubly check ourselves because somebody is looking at us. What kind of habits do we have? How are we presenting ourselves? Because this is how we are presenting Jesus. Are we saying things that we should or shouldn't be saying? As a man of God we also need to closely follow the instruction (doctrine) God has issued. We can't just run through things, God has provided instructions on all subjects but we must read and follow what He has said. Then when we start following we need to continue doing as well. Don't just start and stop over and over again that causes problems. When done right there is results that are guaranteed for us. If we do these things we will protect ourselves from adding extra pain in this life. But a bad lifestyle will keep the people from hearing us. It is too important for us to take heed of these things, souls are on the line.
