As Naomi's bitterness has melted away, she is now concerned for someone other than herself: Ruth. She wants to secure a prosperous future for her daughter-in-law. She concocts a plan to have Ruth remove her widow's clothes of mourning: bathe, anoint herself, and change clothes. This will be a sign to Boaz that she considers herself available for marriage again. As a righteous man he dared not approach her during her grieving. She goes to the threshing floor at night when Boaz laid down for the evening and uncovered his feet then laid down. She covered herself with the cloak of poverty. Upon stirring he sees this woman and asks who she is. Ruth boldly tells him what she's looking for as well as shows him by the images happening here. As he went to cover his legs back up with his garment Ruth asks that he remove her cloak of a needy person and cover her with his garment. In other words, she asked for marriage because he is her Goel (kinsman redeemer). Boaz is struck not by any immorality but by her righteousness! There is one kinsman with higher rights than him and he must find out if his relative will redeem Ruth. But it is clear what both of them are hoping for. In this account there have been a lot of righteous risks taken. It was a risk for Ruth to follow Naomi to Israel; it was a risk for Ruth to go out to the fields to glean; it was a risk for Boaz to treat a Moabite woman so well; it was a risk for Ruth to go to the threshing floor for marriage; and it is a risk for Boaz to take the welfare of this woman so seriously. All of this shows their selflessness. What righteous risks are we willing to make to know Christ and make Him known?
