In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus preaches what is sometimes called "The Beatitudes." In this we see a progression of the Holy Spirit's work in a convert's heart. The "poor in Spirit" are those who see, by God's grace, that they are spiritually bankrupt. This leads to mourning and a meekness of heart. Which leads to a "hunger and thirst for righteousness" which is found in Christ alone who IS the believer's righteousness. The believer then shows mercy to others because they have received mercy; and they develop a pure and sincere heart. Finally, the believer is a "peacemaker." They have peace with God. They desire peace with brothers and sisters in Christ. And they even seek peace with unbelievers as they live and preach the gospel through their changed lives.
