Nehemiah begins repairing the gates. There are 10 gates and we consider the first three gates: the sheep gate, fish gate, and the old gate.
The Sheep Gate pictures Christ's sacrifice on the cross. It has no locks or bars mentioned because the door to salvation is always opened. It is mentioned as the first and the last gate (Nehemiah 3:32) and the only gate that mentions sanctification.
The second gate is the Fish Gate which represents how the believers are to become fishers of men or soul winners.
The third gate studied is the Old Gate which represents the Old Paths (Jeremiah 6:16, Jeremiah 18:15 and Acts 17:21).
It takes only 56 days to repair the gates and the walls and this chapter repeatedly mentions "And next unto them." It is important to do your part in the work of God and to be in your place next to your other co-labourers.
An interesting side note concerns the two rulers of Jerusalem setting aside political differences for the work to be done (Nehemiah 3:9 and 3:12). There are no Democrats and no Republicans in God's work; only those willing to get the job done.
The women also play an important role in the work of God as they labored together with the men. Only true Christianity exalts women to their rightful place.
