Fear can be a paralyzing thing. It's something we all have to deal with at some point or another. And we've seen it come up over and over again in this 8th chapter of Luke's Gospel, which we're finishing up with today.
Two weeks ago when we looked at the Parable of the Sower at the beginning of this chapter, we saw Jesus teaching that crowds about the importance of hearing the word of God with faith.
Not everyone who hears the word really hears it. And not everyone who saw what Jesus did really understood. But those who belong to Christ are those who both hear the word and put it into practice.
And then last week when we looked at verses 22-39, one thing we saw was that the different ways people responded to Jesus corresponded to the different types of soil in the Parable of the Sower.
The faith of the disciples wavered as the storm raged, because they were afraid. And then when Jesus rebuked the wind and the sea, their response was fearful once again. And they asked, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the water obey him?”
And after that Jesus healed a man who was possessed by a Legion of demons. And the people from the Gerasenes were afraid when they saw what Jesus did and begged him to leave. But the man who was released from the demons responded in faith and obedience.
And now, here in verses 40-56, Luke brings this whole section to a conclusion with two more healings. And both healings are again centered on this theme of fear and faith...
