In the hymn of Christ in Philippians 2:6-11, Christ's condescension is traced by degrees from the infinite heights of heaven to the lowest depths. In His humility, He not only takes to Himself humanity, but the lowest estate of humanity. The descent continues further as He obediently subjects Himself to death, but not just any death, death on a cross. The cross was the vilest and most degrading form of execution. Yet, Christ willingly subjected Himself to humiliating torture, bearing the guilt of His people in every age and tribe, language and nation. How can we hold on to selfish ambition and conceit when Christ gave up so much for us?
