If you are Christ's by saving faith then you are holy. You are a saint. You are a holy one. This holiness is more than moral goodness and perfection. It is the fiery otherness of God resting upon you. We read Isaiah 33 in our scripture reading this morning. There it spoke of enjoying the presence of God and one day living in God's heaven come down on earth. "Your eyes" it says in verse 17, "will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches from afar." In verse 20 "your eyes will see Jerusalem, a peaceful abode…that shall not be moved. There the LORD (Yahweh) will be our Mighty One." This is describing the people of God enjoying God's presence and enjoying Him forever in heavenly glory. Verse 14 declares the condition of being before God and being in His heaven by asking these questions: "Who can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?" This is another way of describing the King in His beauty… consuming fire. This is another way of describing the holy city; the peaceable abode… everlasting burning. This is the holy God – a consuming fire - and this is His holy city – a place of the everlasting fire of God. Who can be before this fire of holiness? Answer: Those who have been made holy by God. Those who have been made burning ones are brought into the heavenly, holy fire of God's presence and then they express that holy fire in the world in which they now live through moral excellence… and if you have this fire in you you are now fit to be in heaven one day… where the burning of holiness will be to us a peaceful place.
