Psalm 8's theme is "the greatness of God and the place of man within God's universe." In this Psalm David contrasts the greatness of God with the insignificance of man--but then he is astonished at the significance God created man to have in glorifying Him and caring for His creation as His image. Hebrews 2 verifies that this Psalm ultimately and gloriously is fulfilled in Christ, who, though He is the great God of the universe, was made a little lower than the angels to become man to redeem sinful man and raise him up to significance again.
In the midst of this great Psalm of praise is the principle that man is made as a mediator, of sorts, between God and the beasts. And he is to be looking up to God, becoming like Him, rather than looking down at the beasts, becoming like them (you are what you worship!).
