As Paul remembers the brethren in Philippi in verses 3-8 of chapter 1, he wells up with increasing emotion and conviction about them. And this culminates in verses 7-8 in full-blown, affectionate love for them.
In these two verses we learn three keys to love and unity within the church body: the work of Christ begun in us; our work together in Christ, and Christ personally at work in us.
Ultimately, the recognition of our God's sovereign grace in our lives, our common goal for Christ and the Gospel in the world, and Christ working in us to love what He loves should produce a longing for one another with the affection of Christ Jesus--just as Paul writes in his encouragement to the Philippians.
