Jesus has been arrested and He's going through the legal system. He's meeting with Pilate about the charge of Him being a heretic, claiming to be the Son of God, claiming to be God. It's the day of preparation for the Passover. The Jews had a law that they couldn't do court activities on this day but they did anyway. The Jews were a very unsettling bunch and the Romans were trying to diffuse the crisis and keep peace in the area and keep the riots down. Review: 10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? 11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. The Romans don't have any power over Him unless He gives it to them. And He's granting them this power. When Jesus makes this statement that the one who delivered Him to Pilate has the greater sin, He's talking about the Jews. The Roman government received their portion of sin-blaming by executing Him. The Jews and the Romans broke every law when they tried Jesus. Nothing at all was honest about this trial. The Jews just plain ol' hated Jesus Christ. This law breaking shows their absolute hatred of Jesus Christ and did everything they could till He was crucified. --------------- 12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
