This week, as we return to our series through Luke's gospel, we come to the well known trilogy of Luke 15 - The Lost Sheep, The Lost Coin and The Lost or Prodigal Son. At the beginning of this chapter, the Pharisees and Scribes grumble and rebuke Jesus once again for receiving sinners and eating with them. In telling the three parables, Jesus exposes their stubborn and self-righteous hearts, leaving them 'standing outside in the cold'. Yet, at the same time, he reveals the ever-gracious and loving heart of the Father as we welcomes his lost son home, restoring him to full sonship and celebrating his return.
May the Word of God penetrate our own hearts and expose any self-righteousness of our own. And may the eyes of our hearts be opened to see the heart of the Father towards us in his Son, that we might know we are welcomed into his family, having received the full rights of sons in Him.
