The book of Ruth opens up on a necessary, but very sad note. All goes wrong in the Elimelech household - time of the judges, famine, move out of Judah, new home Moab, Elimelech dies, two sons marry foreign women, two sons die and Naomi is left with nothing but two dependent foreign widows for daughters-in-law. What could be worse? God says the scene is now ready for Him to step in and bring beauty out of the ashes. Ultimately, sadness will be turned to joy, death will result in life, a Gentile will be redeemed, Naomi will be blessed, the Messiah will be provided for Israel and God will be glorified.
