Effective prayer has heaven on your mind, heaven in your heart and truth on your lips.
God wants to forbid the pretense of prayer that we are more spiritual than others. Effective prayer is focused on God and focused on truth.
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.[a] 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.
19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. James 5:16-20 (ESV)
Elijah was righteous by faith and fervent in prayer. . Elijah prayed with his face low to the ground and humbly. The actual words were not given to us, but his prayer was effective. What was he doing? Elijah’s response is our model. God had already promised rain, yet Elijah repeatedly and fervently prayed. He prayed 6 times without results but with a promise rain would come and it did come as he continued to fervently prayed - fervent but not vain repetition.
