Jesus and John the Baptist were cousins. As boys they hardly knew each other. As men they are indissolubly connected. They are linked in the work of salvation. Jesus said, "it becomes us to fulfill all righteousness." Jesus had to identify with sinners without becoming one. Baptism was Jesus' first visible display of obedience. The heavenly Father was completely satisfied with the righteousness rendered by Christ in life and death.
