We begin studying the second section of the sixth petition of the Lord's Prayer tonight, "and deliver us from evil," with Thomas Watson's book, The Lord's Prayer. He begins with having us study the evil of sin itself, in its Satanic origin, its evil nature of treasonous rebellion and high ingratitude to God, its foolishness, its pollution, its debasing and degrading of our honour, how it enslaves us, and how it is unsavoury, painful, and disturbing--and thus, "It is so great an evil that the godly will rather do anything than sin." He also points out that the petition is asking more than what is expressly evident but also includes seeking to progress in piety.
