Singing to the Lord is mentioned around 400 times in the Bible and a command is given to sing more than 40 times. Christianity is a singing religion. In fact, the Bible says God sings, and Jesus sang with his disciples. This sermon examines the Biblical practice of music and singing in congregational worship. Our worship is seen as a meeting with God and consists of God's revelation through his Word and our response to his truth in an orderly progression from God calling us to worship, to our praise of him, acknowledging our sin and hearing his good news of pardon, to prayers, reading the Scripture, offerings, preaching, responses in faith and celebrating the gospel message at the Lord's Table and going forth with God's Word of blessing. In all these elements of corporate worship, appropriate songs and hymns are a vital part.
