This morning, we are going to discuss eternal life—life beyond the grave. How do you get there? What must you do to inherit eternal life? This past week, I have a man walk up to me during a preaching service and said, “I want to be saved.” Now, if we were to begin a discussion on how to be saved, “How many answers do you think people in our city would come up with?” This is a valid question. Some might come back with a further question, “ Why do I need to be saved?” “What does it mean to be saved or born again?” So, when we discuss salvation here at church or in the city, we are talking about being saved from the wrath of God against our sin. A further question may come up, “How can a good God display wrath?” “What would give God the right to be angry about anything?” Many think a good and loving God could never be angry or reject anybody or any action. 1) God is God- the Ultimate Authority. 2) God is holy and hates sin. He is angry with the wicked every day (Psalm 7:11). 3) God is good and love, therefore He must punish sin by pouring out His wrath against it. Since all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, then all people are in need of salvation- deliverance from the wrath of God and reconciliation with Him. Modern ideas of God do not reflect the God of the Bible. Many view God as one who tolerates everything and has a love which forsakes the truth. However, this is not the case and God has proved His point at the cross. In our passage today, we are going to see Jesus addressing two deep questions of the soul. 1) Can I be good or moral enough to get to heaven (self-righteousness)? 2) Can I buy my way into heaven (Self-worth)?
