In I Corinthians 15:33, the Apostle Paul warns the church saying, "Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners." (KJV) Or to put it another way, "…Bad company ruins good morals." (ESV) Paul's point is that bad influences tend to spread. In the Old Testament, the priests were to lead holy lives and be good examples of following the Lord in all ways. That is, there were to be good spiritual leaders and a positive influence. But as we see in the text today, the priests of Malachi's day failed miserably in their calling and the danger was that, instead of being good examples worthy to be followed, they were corrupting the people and the worship of God. While the formal priesthood is now fulfilled in Christ, the principle remains. Those who are called to be leaders ought to heed the warnings, and all those who come to worship should heed them as well.
