As the Savior continues to instruct and comfort His disciples while warning them of His immanent departure, He repeatedly tells them that they will not be left alone. The promise of the Holy Spirit is crucial to their hope going forward and it is crucial for our hope now. It is tempting to think that it would have been a better blessing to sit at the feet of the Savior during His earthly ministry and indeed it would have been a great blessing, but the blessing we have now is surpasses that great blessing. The presence of the Savior is no less true and real now than it was then. Indeed, the Apostle John himself records in chapter 20 that the Savior told Thomas, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Each of us need to be reminded that the indwelling Holy Spirit is the fulfillment of the Savior's promise to never leave us or forsake us. The earnest of the Spirit is a perpetual declaration that whatever the Lord brings upon us in this "vale of tears" He also has given us hope for the future and eternity itself. (Ephesians 1:13, 14) As we will see in future ministry, this glorious mystery has very real and concrete effects on each of us in living day-to-day. Let us hear and heed the Lord's words of assurance and comfort at all times and especially now. – Pastor Schlegel
