We have all been "bitten" by sin - (and it is a serious and a deadly bite) - just as the children of Israel were bitten by the fiery serpents.
But soon they saw their need of a cure and called out for help - and that cure came by a look of faith.
The cure for our sin comes by a look of faith to the Lord Jesus Christ - lifted up upon the Cross, and bearing our sin and shame that we may go free.
Of course, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself mentioned it in John 3:14 while speaking to Nicodemus, so all the more reason why we should take note of, and study this account.
Rev Elliott looks at it under the following headings, concerning the children of Israel:
1.THE PROFANITY THEY DISPLAYED 2.THE CALAMITY THEY SUFFERED 3.THE MERCY THEY SOUGHT 4.THE REMEDY THEY WERE GIVEN
NUMBERS 4: 7-9
7 'Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that He take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.' |
