Jesus had told the disciples that false teachers would come (Matthew 24:11; Mark 13:22–23). In a similar way false prophets had contradicted the true prophets in Old Testament times (e.g., Jeremiah 23:16–40; 28:1–17). Their primary method of dispensing false information is by telling people only what they wanted to hear. So false teachers were twisting Christ's teachings and the words of his apostles. These teachers allowed and even encouraged all kinds of wrong and immoral acts, especially sexual sin. Paul is giving us in very strong language a set of instructions to identify the false teachers and avoid them. In fact, Jesus made it clear that this will be growing over time. He further said that most people will fall victim to them and be led astray from the truth as Satan leads them to destroy you.
