In this sermon we look at the inclination that dwells in the believer for dependance on their own power for the sake of pride and assurance.
Pride is one of the most subtle enemies of Christian service and perspective. False doctrine can impact the believer with appeals to the desires of the flesh to gain glory and merit with God & by the delusion that the merits of Christ must be joined with the merits of man. Putting it in that plain language, a lot would say I reject that outright, yet when terms like progressive sanctification or Lordship salvation or the perseverance of the saints are used, the same will give a big amen to them. Yet within such doctrines are interwoven a great deal of the power of man and assurance based on works.
Taking security in perseverance, sanctification, lordship salvation is all dependent on the behavior and works of the individual even though the word grace is most of the time connected to these doctrines by those who promote them.
The truth is there is no sanctification that cleanses the believer from sin except that which is in Christ through the work of his obedience and sacrifice. There is no salvation except by grace and grace excludes all works. There is no perseverance that brings assurance except perseverance in belief of the gospel of Christ. Pastor J. N. Ewton
