In Acts 15 we learn of the first ever Church Council meeting where the apostles and elders in Jerusalem consider the vitally important question: What must one do in order to be saved? Some were teaching that the Gentile believers needed to be circumcised and abide by the law of Moses in order to be saved. But Peter and the Council concluded that both Jew and Gentile "will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus" – nothing more and nothing less.
The question is a perennial one and the flesh constantly searches and strains to find a way it can contribute to or earn our salvation. Behind this lies the refusal to believe the grace of Christ is enough. Beloved, it really is enough! Christ alone is enough! This is what makes the grace of God so amazing– it truly saves wretches like you and me, brings us safe this far, and powerfully leads us all the way home to the Father.
