On this, the 232nd anniversary of the birth of our nation, it is only right that we should pause and thank the sovereign God of the universe for His signal blessings upon our beloved country. We dare not do a “whitewash” job on our nation's history and heritage. There are some ugly stains on the pages of our history books – the shameless exploitation and displacement of the native Americans, the awful African-American slave economy condoned until the 1860s, and the wickedness spawned by the westward “Gold Rush” of the 19th century.
Notwithstanding, God has been marvelously good to the United States of America! We would be sinfully remiss if we did not count our blessings as fellow-citizens and residents. One of the tell-tale symptoms of a depraved heart (and of a depraved nation) is ingratitude for God's blessings (Rom. 1:21,24).
We must regard God's favor and blessing as a divine stewardship. We should each be asking, “What can I do to show my gratitude” (Ps. 116:12,13)? In gratitude for former mercies, we should seek God for further mercies and continue to “call” upon Him in intercession for ourselves, our countrymen, and our leaders (2 Tim. 2:1,2; 1 Pet. 2:13,14).
