Time's running out for all of us. When we are dead, we cannot work. Jesus says to work while we can, as the night of death is coming. Kohelet seems to be aware of an end-time resurrection, but like Job, David, and Jesus Christ, he understands that death is, for now, the end. Three areas of life are addressed here: work, recreation and serving God. Whatever we find ourselves doing, we are to work hard, as if we had been given the task by Jesus himself. We are also to enjoy what God has abundantly provided—with self-control. Finally, we are to serve God with great zeal, so that we too might be found to have run the race and fought a good fight. |
