Joel records a devastating locust invasion, sent by the Lord to warn the people of their need to repent. It is compared to the Day of the Lord, with the infestation being inevitable, with nobody having the ability to halt it, indiscriminate, affecting everybody in the land, and incredible, on a scale that nobody could imagine.
The prophet warns the people against their sins of outward religion and a drift away from God - sins which plague us even today.
He then sets out the terms of peace: integrity, owning and confessing our sin, and immediacy, turning to the Lord straight away.
Finally, we see the great incentive to come to Christ - full and free forgiveness and shelter from the wrath of God.
