Jesus Must Suffer; He MUST be preached; He MUST restore all things.
Many think to escape the guilt of their sins by pleading ignorance. Peter shows that this is not a complete defense, because they must till repent of the horrible deed. If they had not committed the sin of unbelief, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory. That is true, but only mitigates the offense somewhat, it does not remove it. The man who deliberately murders his neighbor by running his car over him will be charged with a more serious offense than the one who gets drunk and does the same thing.
Some of the rulers of the Jews knew that Jesus was the Messiah and were more guilty than the Jews who did not. When Christ prayed on the Cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do,” He was not speaking in absolute terms, but in relative terms, and may have had the Roman soldiers more in mind than others. But all who participated in that horrid event were called to repentance and faith, for without repentance and faith there is no forgiveness of sins, for this is always the work of the Holy Spirit in regeneration.
Neither ignorance nor the Sovereignty of God excuses the evil that we do, and we must repent of it.
