In the early 1950s, when Rolfe Barnard, A. D. Muse and other Baptist preachers began to see that the great foundational truths of grace were not being preached in Baptist circles, they began to encourage a renewal of Bible-based, old-time Baptist "Calvinistic" preaching and teaching.
The result was the beginning of several Bible Conferences emphasizing the doctrines of grace that had been taught by our best-known Baptist preachers of the past — Bunyan, Gill, Spurgeon, Carroll, Boyce, Pink, et al. The first such "Sovereign Grace Conference" was held in the Ashland, Kentucky church pastored by a young man named Henry Mahan.
Barnard had suffered some isolation from the popular "fundamentalist" Baptists because he had come to embrace the doctrine of God's unconditional election of His people. He felt the need of fellowship in the truth, and knew a few others of like mind. So he was asked to be the "keynote speaker" at this first conference in Ashland, in 1954!
This is Bro. Barnard's message, a heart-cry for fellowship that is soundly based in the right doctrine — and experience — and practice. Hear this historic message and may God use these words in separating your heart unto His Eternal Truth: "SALVATION IS OF THE LORD!" Amen.
