In verse 9, Peter warned us that those who are not maturing in the faith are short-sighted. They only see the things immediately in front of them rather than having a heavenly focus. Some are that way to the point of blindness which means that they do not see eternal life, i.e. they are not saved. Peter now exhorts us to make our calling and election sure. He has just given the prescription on how to do that: add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness and to brotherly kindness love. Peter is telling us that this is the way to make our calling and election sure, strategically working to growing in these areas. Those who do will be sure in their faith and can have assurance that God has supplied an entrance to them into eternal life. Peter considers this message so important that he tells us that as long as he lives, this is his message. He knows he is not going to live much longer. He is close to his crucifixion, but this is what he wants us to remember after his death.
