Upon further examination, the rich man finds it is not possible for him to do what it requires to inherit eternal life. There are many obstacles in life which prevent people, even the wealthy, from inheriting treasure in heaven. Thus the rich man is sorrowful and Jesus' disciples are shocked. The exchange between Jesus and the rich man becomes yet another opportunity for Jesus to teach the disciples about the kingdom of God, chiefly, that their God is the God of the impossible.
