The world must function with champions and guardians of rights and justice in the here and now. We need judges and rulers and law enforcers and military to defend and uphold civil laws and to provide a measure of equity in our age. And as citizens of this world we are participants in that system. But on a personal level… not as citizens in society who must uphold and defend the laws that make society equitable… just as individuals and as members of the body of Christ, our instinct is to be different. We are not to live for and fight for and make our battleground the causes for our personal rights in this age. We are instead told by Jesus to ‘turn the other cheek' ‘to give the extra coat' ‘to go the extra mile' and by Paul here ‘to accept the wrong' ‘let yourself be cheated.' Cheated out of a temporary privilege… Big Deal! We have the honor and riches of eternity ahead of us.
