Paul planted the church, and Apollos who ministered in turn after Paul “watered” the seeds of the gospel that Paul had planted, but it was God who caused that Gospel seed to germinate and produce a harvest of converts.
The church always seems to forget this. Charles Finney had said that conversion was simply the application of the right use of means as if we caused the growth. Finney said “There is nothing in religion beyond the ordinary powers of nature. It consists entirely in the right exercise of the powers of nature. It is just that, and nothing else. When mankind become religious, they are not enabled to put forth exertions which they were unable before to put forth. They only exert powers which they had before, in a different way, and use them for the glory of God.” People fall into that trap and begin to assume that all we need to produce a revival or conversion is the right program, the right approach, Paul shows us that is not true. Conversion while it accompanies the preaching of the word is manifestly a supernatural work of God. He is the one who brings the increase or not.
