In the context of our lessons on "Living in God's Economy," we now start a mini-series on sins connected to money, beginning with the love of money or materialism.
The love of money is a worship issue: placing your faith in money--a belief that money will meet your needs and make you happy. However, the love of money is not a spending problem. Rather, using 1 Timothy 6 as our guide, the love of money is a:
• Contentment problem – we are to be thankful for whatever God gives us, whether riches or poverty. As we walk in humility before the Lord—accepting his providence—it will produce contentment. And if you are content, money ceases to be a temptation. You can resist the love of money. Your focus is upon God, His providence, and kind provisions.
• Identity problem – that considering who we are – finite, sinful creatures who are on a one-way trip to the grave – it does not make sense to covet money. The only thing that makes sense is to love Jesus and make Him our treasure.
