Paul recognized that freedom consists in conformity to the truth, so that the Christian's freedom in Christ has its authentic expression in a life of slavery: a life as Christ's bondslave and therefore a life as the slave of all men for the sake of Christ and His gospel. Paul lived in this way; he became all things to all men both in the Church and in the world for the sake of their faith and completion in Christ. But Paul also recognized that this life of slavery has a third component: In order to serve men as Christ's bondslave, a Christian has to "enslave" himself (9:27). That is, he must bring his own needs, concerns, interests and desires into subjection to the cause of the gospel.
