It is commonly agreed that the Corinthian justice system was corrupt, but is this all that Paul was concerned about? In other words, if the rulings had of been just, would Paul have been happy about what was taking place in the church there? No, because the Corinthian believers were failing in their relationships and responsibilities. They had their eyes set on exploiting and hurting each other, rather than pursuing justice and truth. Justice is defined by God and believers are expected to uphold this standard in all of their relationships and dealings--even if it means to their own hurt. The believer's high calling requires him to judge justly amongst the brethren and to submit to just judgment from the brethren. However, corrupt motives, like self-seeking and revenge, destroy one's ability and credibility with respect to upholding justice and truth.
