This is another of a series that Christ declared, prior to His crucifixion. It the Holy Land in those days the custom was for the Bridegroom to come in the evening to fetch the bride from her home to his. The bride would have been purchased before hand. The Virgins were involved in dressing the bride in her best finery and as the bridegroom approached, announced with the cry, "Behold the bridegroom cometh, Go ye out to meet him," the bride, accompanied by her attendants, would go forth to meet him. If darkness had fallen they would light their lamps and go forth. In the parable, it was midnight when the bridegroom arrived. Meanwhile, they had all slept. Is not this a characteristic of much of the Church today? Five of the virgins had no oil in their lamps. But who are they? if they are representative of true believers how could they be shut out of the Marriage Supper? As Paul teaches in Romans 8:9, "Now if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His." Being attendants I suggest they are ministers to the Bride of Christ. But five were foolish, they were not wise unto salvation. Be that as it may, the lesson here to be learned is that we need to be ready whenever the call comes.
