The doctrine of the Trinity, and by extension, the doctrine of the person and work of Christ, has been the primary area where the true faith and a false faith is often determined. This has been true from the beginning of the Savior's ministry until the present day. During His earthly ministry, His claims about who He was and the nature of His ministry would inevitably enrage His enemies and often confuse His followers and disciples. Getting the doctrine right is absolutely critical and to fail is absolutely fatal. As our confession answers regarding the person and work of Christ, "…although they make their boast of him…they deny the only Savior Jesus…." (HC Q/A 30) In the final days of the Savior's earthly ministry, He takes the time to answer questions and to reveal to the bewildered disciples profound and mysterious truths about Himself and the nature of the Trinity they would come to understand and teach. It is the nature of the orthodox doctrine that some of it is inaccessible to mere humans. Nevertheless, we can understand and profess what is revealed to us in the Scriptures, and by the illumination of the Holy Spirit come to perceive more and more deeply the glories of the One True God in three Persons. – Pastor Schlegel
