The arrival of chapter 4 marks the transition from theology to ethics. Paul opens verse 1 with the word "therefore" which signals that he is about to set forth the logical implications of prior statements. In this case, the logical implications take the form of ethical admonitions and the statements Paul looks back to are the various theological propositions set forth in chapters 1-3. The call to "walk" worthily is the broad and general ethical admonition which will be unfolded from numerous angles throughout chapters 4-6; however, Paul makes that call to walk worthily very specific in the context of the first few verses as he provides four adverbial qualifiers of the walk Christians are called to: with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, and diligence in preserving the unity of the Spirit. These 4 qualifiers of the call to walk worthily form the subjective dimensions of the godly behavior which promotes visible unity in the body of Christ.
