Israel's departure from Sinai, after the Lord's merciful renewal of the covenant, found the nation immediately falling back into unbelief and rebellion. The result was forty years of wandering in the wilderness until the entire rebellious generation had perished. Their children entered the promised land, but followed the example of their forefathers. After Joshua died Israel continued to decline socially and religiously until it was indistinguisable from the nations around it. Though God's "son" by covenant, Israel had sunk to the level of Sodom. Whatever its stated commitment to covenant fidelity, the tragic fact emphasized over and over again by the text was that Israel had no hope of fulfilling its calling as the seed of Abraham. Nevertheless, the Lord's promise to him would be fulfilled because of His own power and faithfulness. Yahweh would triumph through another Israel - another descendent of Abraham.
