Do you remember the first lesson your learn as you step out of the "Faith Hall of Fame" in chapter 11? The Christian life is a race – a marathon of faith!
The Old Testament saints ran this same race (from Abel to Abraham to Rahab to Daniel). Their testimony to the New Testament saints is that faith in God works!
But the clearest testimony, the greatest example, the ultimate victor, is Jesus. He ran His race from start to finish, always out in front, and is now enthroned in glory! The right hand of the throne of God is the ultimate podium!
So you and I are called to get rid of distractions and sins…entanglements. You are I are called to look to Jesus, the leader and the victor. By faith, you and I are called to run…by faith. But our race will not always be easy. And we sometimes fail to run according to the rules.
Let's keep reading our passage, 12:3-11 (focus on vv.4-11).
The race of the Christian life includes God's discipline when we don't run well. You won't complete the race of faith if you don't accept the Father's discipline. This morning we'll consider: i.) A reminder concerning endurance and discipline (vv.4-6 ). ii.) An explanation connecting a relationship and discipline (vv.7-9). iii.) A promise regarding holiness and discipline (vv.10-11).
