Scholars have had a difficult time classifying Hannah's speech here in 1 Samuel 2. Sometimes this is called a prayer, at other times a song of thanksgiving, and then sometimes a prophecy. Although, this speech seems to contain these various elements, a better way to classify this passage is to see it as a prophetic lawsuit. Three factors work together to focus attention on the element of lawsuit: the speaker, the location, and the audience. As Hannah, who has had an incredible experience of grace in the form of reversal of barrenness, speaks words of judgment against the rulers of Israel (Eli and his sons), and all of this taking place in the public forum of the tabernacle. Hannah's message then is a two-edged sword: a message of judgment to Israel's leaders and a message of hope to the people of God as she sets their hopes on the future exaltation of the Lord's Christ.
