This is the King James Translation. In the ESV, the critical verse 15:1 is translated:
After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great."
You see the issue: Is God Himself Abram's exceeding great reward, or is God giving Abram a very great reward? In reality, the two translations are both valid ways to translate the Hebrew word order, and I think they end up meaning close to the same thing in context. Clearly God is Abram's shield and God is the great reward.
